Exams and Consultations
Upon arriving at FCVC, a client care specialist will welcome you and your pet. They will discuss with you the purpose for your visit. This will be logged in the patient’s medical record. You will be placed in the appropriate room where a trained staff member will further discuss any concerns you might have and provide options for preventative care. We do believe that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. After seeing a nurse, the veterinarian will do a thorough exam on your pet. This exam will include several areas: Dental, skin, eyes, ears, and joints are some of the things that will be checked. We like to call it our “nose to tail” exam. Sometimes it can be very beneficial to diagnose an illness or disease in the early stages. We encourage blood work for pets as they age, or sometimes with an illness, to assist in diagnosing or assessing what treatments or medications may be indicated. Our first goal is prevention. If we can not prevent an illness or disease, then we want to assist in offering quality compassionate treatment for your pet.
Nutritional Management
Many metabolic conditions such as diabetes, thyroid conditions, obesity, kidney functions, digestive issues, and allergies, may require prescription diets to assist in better quality of treatment and better quality of life. Maintaining a healthy weight is also very important for your pet. Pets that are overweight may be at a higher risk for a variety of diseases and conditions, such as diabetes, joint pain, ruptured ligaments, heart disease, and more. The staff of FCVC will gladly offer information on quality diets to meet the needs of your pet.
Pets’ nutritional needs change as they enter different stages of their lives. The best way to make sure your pet’s needs are being met is to consult with us about a diet made specifically for his or her lifestyle.

It is our goal help reduce your stress during and after surgical procedures while offering excellent pain management and care for your pet. Our doctors and staff will be available to discuss any concerns and instructions for pet upon discharge. Clear discharge instructions will be provided for you to take home including restrictions, instructions for any medications sent home and rechecks needed. Please do not hesitate to contact our office with any concerns after surgery for your pet.
Vaccines
There are a variety of diseases which affect our pets and other animals. This makes proper vaccinations vital in protecting them from many types of illnesses they are susceptible to. Some of these illnesses can be spread to humans, including Rabies. El Paso County has experienced a huge increase in the cases of Rabies that have been verified. PLEASE keep your pet current on rabies vaccination. It is important to consult with us about the unique risk of living in our region and your pet’s lifestyle. We will be happy to discuss the benefits of protecting your pet with vaccinations, as well as, provide you with information on the required vaccinations for your pet.
Microchipping
Every year, thousands and thousands of pets go missing. Not knowing where your pet is or how to bring them back can be a helpless, hopeless feeling. It’s a tragedy that happens all too often. But there is a simple and effective way to ensure your pet’s safety and retrieval should they ever become lost. Microchipping is a standard procedure that implants a tiny chip underneath your pet’s fur. This microchip is registered with your pet’s vital information and can be scanned by veterinarian or animal shelters to assist in the return of your pet to you.
Preventative Medicine
Regular checkups allow us to establish a baseline in your pet’s health and make us aware of any changes that may indicate future problems. We highly recommend bringing your pet in for regular exams. Often times health problems that go undetected can become more serious issues when left untreated, so checkups are important even when your pet appears healthy. Keep in mind that for every year that goes by for your pet, that is equal to approximately 7 years for you. That means if your pet sees a veterinarian for an “annual” exam, that is like you seeing a doctor for a “seven year exam”. A lot can happen in 7 years. One area that is often missed by owners when checking their pets is dental disease. Regular dental cleanings are much less expensive that oral dental surgery to extract numerous teeth and much better for your pet. Detection and treatment of early dental disease can reduce the number of extractions your pet might need, greatly reduce the amount of pain your pet is in from dental disease “a bad tooth or teeth”, reduce bone infection and even prolong the life of your pet. Our pets can not tell us when a tooth starts to hurt. Close examination of the teeth and gums by a veterinarian, may assist in the early prevention and treatment of dental disease.
Diagnostics
Our hospital provides a wide variety of in-house diagnostic testing from in-house laboratory abilities, in-house urinalysis, to in-house digital dental and full-body x-ray. If we are unable to, or the doctor desires different testing, our outside reference labs offer very fast turn around times for results. Many results are available the following day.
Pharmacy
We offer an in-house pharmacy to fill many your pet’s prescription needs. Having an on-site pharmacy provides you with a more convenient way to get your pet’s medication. We hope that this will save you time and ultimately enhance your experience with us. FCVC also is incorporating the service of our on-line pharmacy for many products that we may not offer in-house. The doctors at FCVC will also gladly provide an outside prescription to you for your pet’s medications.
